Understanding Parts of the Day
Morning, afternoon, evening, night — and the AM/PM system that organizes them
45 minFoundations
Learning Objectives
- Identify and name the different parts of the day — morning, afternoon, evening, and night
- Use the terms AM and PM correctly to indicate time of day on a 12-hour clock
- Categorize common daily activities into their typical time segments
- Recognize and use idiomatic expressions related to time and parts of the day
Around the World
Different cultures divide the day differently. In Spain and many Latin American countries, "la tarde" (afternoon) extends well past 5 PM, and dinner commonly happens at 9 or 10 PM. In Japan, there's a concept called "yonaka" (deep night) and "akegata" (dawn) that subdivide nighttime more precisely. Understanding these differences helps when communicating across cultures.
Quick Check
1. What does 12:00 AM represent?
2. Which time expression means "working or studying very late at night"?
3. A friend texts you: "Let's meet at 7." How would you clarify this?
